David Adjaye - Urban Africa

Published on 02-02-2010 by Skyscrapernews.com
There are few famous names amongst British architects who claim to have African roots, but one of those few is David Adjaye, one of the most acclaimed names of his generation in the business.

The Design Museum is hosting an exhibition of his work that rather breaks from his usual line of designing buildings and masterplanning urbanism. Entitled Urban Africa, the display is an exploration by Adjaye of some of the largest cities in Africa with him using photography to document the urbanism and architecture there from the traditional to the modern.

Places visited by Adjaye and his camera include Kigali which is the capital city of Rwanda. Having been wracked by civil strife, and little development since de-colonialisation, the city retains many hints of its old European imperial past. Other places visited include Pretoria, a city still dominated by the planning of apartheid with its massive black ghettos, and Abuja, a relatively new city in Nigeria that is located in the centre of the country in what was deemed a neutral location to both the Christian and Muslim halves of the population. These day's it is on the receiving end of some pretty substantial oil money.

Adjaye's exhibition, essentially a photo travelog of Urban Africa, is running at the Design Museum from the 31st of March 2010 to the 5th of September 2010. You can find it at Shad Thames, London, SE1 2YD.
